The Colukabki Disease

IIT Bombay student Anupam Biswas 5th Year Mechanical Engg is suffering from Colukabki (caused due to excessive nabad and depression) a disease very rarely found (3 in a billion). His condition is very pathetic and the treatment is very expensive, obviously his parents are not able to afford his treatment. Orkut has agreed to pay 1 paisa after each time this message is forward. So please pass to all ur friends.

Colukabki is a pretty interesting disease. It is one of those rare diseases that are not indexed by google and no information can be found on it. When I get this kind of spam from well meaning friends, I am left wondering how could they be so stupid. Okay, most people who have forwarded this message are not stupid per se, its just that they probably know it well enough that companies (Google, Orkut, Yahoo, MSN etc etc) don’t pay people to forward messages but somehow forget this when faced with a message that could “help save a life”. Something to do with human psychology?

Oh Btw, I was under the impression that Engineering courses were of 4 year duration, since when did we have a 5th year Mechanical Engineering student?

Hehe, right on. And how would orkut know a message has been forwarded anyway? Colukabki… what imagination ? Some people can be so stupid believing such things. More stupid, spammers who actually goof up like that “5 year course” thingy :)).

Didn’t Einstein say this or something to this effect:
Universe may have a boundary, but Human Stupidity knows no bounds… :)

Even you can write such a email, and send it to All the people on your address book, you bet - a quarter of them are going to forward it to ALL the people in their address books.

well it seems that colukabki is nothing but i want to clear the misconception among many observers that the eng course combined Btech and Mtech is of 5 yr and is offered from many colleges also there is another word in this message ‘nabad’ try searching this word also in google and u will end up with National
Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development in India and somalia embassy!!!

  4. Leon Leon Says:

IITs are conducting 5 year engg. courses.
after which you can get an M.Tech.
While joining IIT the student has the option for choosing one of these

    either 5 year M.Tech or 4 year B.Tech

Hey I wanna make u all clear about the word “Nabad”. It’s IIT-Bombay Lingo for “A tense state of mind”(Its short form of Nervous Break Down - NBD)

  6. Jhumki Jhumki Says:

I must say that you’re right. most of the people forward such messages without even thinking twice, and that has all to do with the human psych. They do their ‘good deed of the day’ by forwarding such messages. Leon is right there is a five-year M.Tech. Dual Degree Course offered by four IITs. my friend’s acquaintance is doing one in aero-space engg. from kharagpur.

I saw the scrap in one of my friends scrapbook, and before forwarding it, i thought i should be checking about the disease condition and to my surprise there was nothing like that in any of the search engines (google,MSN,yahoo) so please dont get carried away by such things please check before doing anything it might well be saving someones life as in hindi it is always said “bhale logon ka zamana nahi raha.” “Colukabki ” beware of such words and please do check and verify it.

  14. Pranesh Bhargava Pranesh Bhargava Says:

By the way, it is not Colukabki, but Nervous Break Down (NBD or nabad) is a big problem among IIT students. When I was at IIT Bombay, one student had committed suicide, another 5th year collapsed and died due to exhaustion, while one had slashed his wrists. Another at IIT Kanpur had also committed suicide. The issue rocked the IITs and we ended up losing 13 hours from 24 hours of internet connection per day.

A group at IIT Bombay made a very touching short play called Deja Vu on this issue. Worth watching.

So the problem is real, though the context is of spam.

  15. Anup Anup Says:

I m one of the stupid who forwarded this message to all my friends. But i thought it was for a good cause. Usually what happens is if once we get the idea that its all scrap then we guys tend to avoid all such messages even when one of it really is true. How to come across such spam is really a big question. Well plz if any one could tell me how then i wopnt make the mistake again……

is there any way to avoid that type of messages??
is the social networks like orkut, yahoo etc., will really pay any amount to that peoples if it is true???
please any one give answer to my last question

  27. Rajanna Rajanna Says:

It is basic human psychology!!! ofcourse u dont lose anythin by forwarding a msg!! and if it really saves a life den it worth doing it. Just because ten of them are fake , a genuine one must not be ignored! thats how i operate!!!! I dont have the time to check whether the disease is true or not. Being a doctor myself, I am aware that there are so many diseases existing without our knowledge. How many of u guys know about popliteal pterygium syndrome? So if you wanna do a good deed , do it. Dont discourage others from doing it. How sure are you that the companies dont pay for it? So better leave things as they are. Nature has its own way of dealing with such things. So if u wanna forward , forward or else delete it and dont make an issue outta it!!!! Its a request!

  28. Rajanna Rajanna Says:

And for u guys not to underestimate the broad medical world, I am preparing a list of rare hard to believe diseases. I’ll post it once I’m done with it.
